Q: Please tell me about yourself – what kind of a person you are, your beliefs, your nature, your follies, anything.
A: I am a nurturer by nature. I need to have someone or something to care for all the time. I think that may be natural for most women. Now that my son is older and doesn't need me as much, I am learning to put a lot of extra time into Biblical study and my writing. I consider myself to be a Christian first, a wife second, a mother third, then family and friends come after in my life. I'm very introverted, but very happy with living this way. After all, there's never been a better time in recent history to be a home body.
Q: Tell me about your writing journey, when and how did it all start?
A: When I was growing up, I kept journals. I don't recall it being an assignment. I just always did it instead of a diary. I had too much to get out on paper. I wish I had kept them, but I didn't. When I left home, I thought I was starting over and there would be no more problems. It's funny what you think when you are young. I went to Middle Tennessee State University to study journalism. I wanted to write for the news. I wanted to travel. However, I couldn't continue going and working full time. My parents didn't know anything about grants, nor did I. So, I quit college and went to a smaller college called Nashville College. I got a medical secretary degree from there a lot quicker. I was able to just work. It was not until my son was grown that I began to think again about writing. When we moved out of our home in Joelton to one my husband built in Ashland City, I had read almost all the books I could find labeled dystopian in Amazon Kindle at the time. I thought to myself that I could write one. I sat at my laptop and wrote the trilogy, 'Idella's Journal'. Of course, it started as just a book. Right away, I knew it needed to be a trilogy. I've been writing ever since.
Q: Tell me about all the difficulties faced in getting a publisher to publish your book.
A: I still have not settled with a publisher. I will not pay for publishing. Therefore, I need a traditional publisher. To get a traditional publisher, I first need a literary agent. I cannot send a book that is on Amazon to an agent. I am currently writing two books. One for Amazon. I am not sure if the other will go to Amazon or to an agent. It is a Christian book. I would probably prefer to send a fantasy, dystopian book to an agent. I have tried once to a few, but gave up and chose to release on Amazon. It's a tough call to make.
Q: Do you believe that marketing is essential for the success of a book?
A: Yes, marketing is very essential. Social media plays a vital role in selling your books. I doubt that I'm doing a very good job at all. I try, but there are days that I am not on at all. I am not on Facebook or Twitter at all. I know some people pay for marketing, and I cannot. I just have to trust that it will sell as much as it's going to sell.
Q: What marketing ideas did you deploy for marketing your book?
A: I give a free eBook just about each weekend right now for people to read and hopefully review. Plus, I review other authors' books, in turn sometimes they review mine.
Q: Do you interact with your readers? What do they say about your book?
A: Yes, I encourage reviews. Most of them seem to really like them. At first, I needed to make some edits. Now, they seem to truly like my story ideas. They like the flow of the story as well.
Q: What suggestions would you like to offer potential authors?
A: Make sure you set aside time to write every day, even if it's not the book you are writing (your work in progress WIP). Just write something. Also, read every day. You are learning when you read. Read different styles and different genres. It will help you to be a better writer.
